First Things First

I talked in my last blog about resilience and how we keep going when life feels unpredictable. One of the ideas I shared was around how crucial our wellbeing habits are to our ability to endure long periods of uncertainty. None of us can predict the future, but we do know that when we are doing well physically, emotionally and mentally we are much more able to respond well to whatever happens in life.

However, when life gets busy things like exercise, sleep, rest and eating well can often be the first things to go.  We all know how important these things are, but we often find them hard to prioritise.  How ironic that the very things that nourish and sustain us are seen as add ons that we squeeze in if we have time left over at the end of the day.

I have recorded another video with fellow coach Laura Duggal (see below) where we briefly discuss some practical ideas to help us prioritise the activities and habits that help us to be more resilient. I truly believe that if we are able to put our wellbeing before our to do lists it will transform the way we live.

During lockdown many people have been re-evaluating their life and work, asking themselves if they want to go back to the way they were living before the lockdown. So many families I have spoken to have enjoyed having more time together, exploring new places and having family meals. Many of us have discovered a new love of the outdoors or a daily walk. A lot of the people I’ve spoken to are rethinking whether they want to go back to long commutes and working hours.

As lockdown eases we have a choice about whether we go back to the way we were living before. It would be easy to jump back onto the treadmill of work and family life without pausing to take stock, and ask if the way we were living pre-lockdown was working for us. For example, what do you want to keep and want do you want to change?

I’m a big fan of Dr Chatterjee’s 'Feel Better. Live More' podcast and his latest one is a brilliant interview with Dr Alex Pang about how when we work less we get more done. Dr Pang is author of the book ‘Rest’ and former Silicon Valley tech consultant. You can listen to it here.

If you would value some headspace to reassess your life and work as we emerge from lockdown do get in touch. I’ve really been enjoying talking with those of you have have sent me a message.
